Shadow Magic (Sisters of Magic Book 1) by Donna Grant

4 Stars

An unknown evil.

This is a relaunch of a previously released book by Donna Grant from early in her career.  It is well written, with great characters and good world building.  If you’ve read other books by Donna, you can see how she has grown as a writer over time.  In this book we meet Serena of Hawthorne who is a bana-bhuidseach (a witch) and Drogan, Lord of Wolfglynn, with secondary characters of Gerald of Hawthorne and his wife and new baby.  Serena is bearing a curse, which is an important part of the story and is a seer who gets glimpses of possible futures.  From these pieces, Donna Grant weaves an intricate tale of magic, evil, and love.  This 3-book series is interwoven with the presence of both magic and evil, and how it affects all the people involved.  I enjoyed how Donna Grant uses both of her main characters to tell the story which is set in England during the reign of King Henry, probably during the 1400s.

The next book in the series is Echoes of Magic, and I’m looking forward to reading it.

I was given a copy of the book through BookFunnel, and this is my honest opinion.

Ignite the Magic (Dark Kings #0) by Donna Grant

5 Stars

A Pre-History novel

This is a prequel to the Dark Kings books, but also the Dark Sword and Dark Warriors.  It is a story of the Dragons on Earth, when there are only dragons.  We learn about them, their Kings, and the King of Dragon Kings.  In particular we meet Lennox, the King of Silvers and the King of Kings.  And we also meet a Fae, a Dark Fae named Allis, who has been watching her world, inhabited by both Dark and Light Fae start to fall apart and into war.  She’s alone with no living family, and decides she is going to try and create a Fae Doorway, something no other Fae has been able to accomplish.  Either she creates it or dies trying, but she has to get away from her world.  This is the set-up Donna Grant has written to introduce us to our two main characters.  Lennox, the strongest dragon on Earth, has underlying compassion and intelligence.  Allis is a frightened woman who truly only wants to explore new places as her aunt had encouraged her to before her death.  This is a must read if you’re a fan of Donna’s Dark Universe and gives us some history of an important character who we’ve all been waiting for their story.  Mind!  Donna Grant doesn’t give us all the information we want in this book, which gave me more questions, but it does tell us how things were playing out for our Dragons before humans enter onto the scene.  Well written as always, my only negative is that the middle of the book seemed to go on and on longer than it needed.  But the overall story is 5 Stars.

I was given and ARC by the author, and this is my honest opinion.

Ignite the Magic (Dark Kings #0) by Donna Grant COMING SOON on 15 August 2023!

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Donna Grant delivers an epic prequel to her long-running and critically acclaimed Dark Universe series.

Passion’s magic ignites a fire too hot to touch—and too wicked to die…

The stars have always called to Ailis, beckoning her to see what other realms were out there. She’s told its impossible, but that doesn’t stop her need to explore beyond what others believe. Ailis never expected to change history by creating the first doorway to another realm. She certainly never imagined opening that door to find a commanding dragon who shifts into a man. She’s irresistibly drawn to Lennox, powerless against the yearning of her body and the longing of her heart.

Magic might have chosen Lennox as King of Dragon Kings, but it’s a position he’s never wanted. Until the day a new being arrives—and irrevocably changes his life. The closer he gets to the fearless, ravishing woman, the more he fights the passion that flares between them. He lives only for his duty, but one fiery kiss unleashes a firestorm of desire that will ripple across eons and realms. Fate might have brought them together, but will it also tear them apart?

The origins of the Dark Kings/Dragon Kings and the entire Dark Universe is finally revealed.

The Witch is Back by Sophie H. Morgan

5 Stars

Love this story!

Our two main characters are both witches; Emmaline Bluewater is weak, while Bastian Truenote is strong.  Nearly a decade ago they were engaged, but Bastian left Emma with no explanation and hasn’t been back.  He was cursed, bat can’t tell her.  Heartbroken, Emma moves to a new town and starts to put her life back together.  Now Bastian is back, and wants them to marry, because of the curse.

I enjoyed this book; even thought I’d like to slap some sense into these two characters.  They have chemistry which makes this a fun read.  Sophie Morgan has done a wonderful job on the two main characters, and some of the secondary ones have potential-maybe sequels in the future?  Hope so for this engaging author and the world she’s created.

I was given an ARC of the book through NetGalley, and this is my honest opinion.

A wider field for evil

In this, book 2, we meet two new characters, Asa, a witch from the Viking homelands and Rory Sutherland who is the banished 3rd son of the Laird of Sutherland of Scotland.  He has been tasked by Asa’s sister in Norway to find her and warn her of an impending crisis.  Traveling from Norway Rory is dying from his wounds after being attacked while hunting Asa.  He finds her in Scotland, and collapses after only telling her she must run.  Asa has been meandering after having lost everyone who has meant something in her life.  She left her home in Norway and now finds herself trying to help this man who is dying on the ground in front of her….  And so, Donna Grant starts weaving another compelling tale in her Kindred universe.  An exciting storyline will keep you reading and invested in the main characters, along with new evil in the wilds of Scotland where the Kindred stories are set.  Enjoyed this book, with the turns and reappearance of others who are fighting this new evil.  I received this ARC from the author through BookFunnel and this is my honest opinion.

A Vampire’s Spooktacular Wedding (Misfits of New Orleans: Book 2) by Valerie Twombly

4 Stars

Short but cute.

Book 2 in the Misfits of New Orleans gives us Sabrina and Christoph having a baby and getting married.  This book allows vampires a lot more leeway than other authors have given them, which makes this book interesting.  With a number of side characters, this story gives us everyone from Satin to an ex-girlfriend.  A fun quick read, looking forward to the next book.  I was given an ARC thorough BookSirens and this is my honest opinion.

Witching the Night Away Anthology-A Potion for Your Thoughts by Michelle M. Pillow

4 Stars

How lucky is Lucky Valley?

This is part of an anthology series called Witching the Night Away which has 12 different author’s short stories.

Michelle M. Pillow has written other stories set in (Un)Lucky Valley, and this short story gives us Jessamine (Jessie) Goode as our main character.  She is being forced to go to Lucky Valley to refuse an inheritance.  Her aunt and sister both are living there, so she is staying with them.  And she has a handsome hot half-Elf trying to help her with everything that is going sideways for her.  I enjoyed this 3rd installment of the (Un)Lucky Valley series and look forward to more tales of the strangeness that happens there.  I was given an ARC through BookSprout, and this is my honest opinion.

Grot: A Monster Romance (Backyard Goblin Gods: Book 3) by Roxy Collins

4 Stars

Continuing the series with Book 3

Readers need to read the first two books of this series to completely understand and follow the events.  This book features Grottu, called Grot by most of the characters, who has come through the crust to find his fated one.  Here, waiting by the opening in the crust are sisters of a “Chosen Family” who are hoping to be the one the goblin finds.  Except the one sister, Jessica, called Jess, Capulet is a nursing student who wants to finish her studies.  But her offering, thrown into the opening in the crust, is the one that Grot knows marks his fated mate.  And along for this ride is Grot’s brother Glintu, called Glint, who also claims Jess is his fated one.  The author, Roxy Collins, takes us on a winding journey to a satisfying conclusion for our main characters.  The writing is good, with no obvious errors or grammar problems. Characters are well developed, and the story moves along at a steady pace.  Looking forward to reading the next book in the series.  I was given an ARC of the book by the author through BookSirens and this is my honest opinion.

Dark Alpha’s Fury (Reapers #16) by Donna Grant

5 Stars

What a finish!

Wow!  For this last book in the Reapers series, Donna Grant has given us the final Reaper, Aisling, who has been following the Fae Xanath for several books.  This gives us the ending of a story arc that has covered numerous books, going back to when Usaeil was Queen of the Light Fae. With the evil that is trying to destroy the Reapers, and take over Earth, we get to enjoy appearances from other Reapers, Death, and some Dragon Kings.  Well written, with an exciting plotline, I enjoyed this book as much as Balladyn’s.  The authors blub for this book hints that even though this series is complete, we will probably still see some of them in her new series, the Skye Druids, which is also a part of her larger Dark World.  A fitting finale for the Reapers, I look forward to continue reading books set in this expansive world.  I was given an ARC of the book by the author through BookFunnel, and this is my honest opinion.
